One of Coventry’s oldest youth charities has received a welcome boost this Christmas thanks to the local community giving generously to its annual “CovenTREE Christmas Wishlist” appeal.

CBGC (Coventry Boys & Girls Club) has tirelessly provided youth clubs, educational resources, and sporting activities in the city since 1935, but those who work for the charity have noted that due to the current cost of living crisis, many parents and carers are struggling to find the extra income required to provide their kids with Christmas presents.

It is thought that around one quarter of children in Coventry are living in relative poverty, according to figures provided by Save the Children UK. The grim reality is that many families are experiencing a crisis this Christmas due to the continued effects of inflation and other rising costs.

As a result, and to give every child the chance unwrap a treat this year, CBGC launched the “CovenTREE Christmas Wishlist” appeal earlier this month. The welcome idea sees a Christmas tree installed at the charity’s headquarters on 50 Whitefriars Street. The public have been visiting the club and taking a random tag from the tree. Each tag includes a suggested idea for a present. The tag owner then purchases a gift and brings it back to CBGC. So far, the generosity of local individuals and businesses has provided much needed hope just as the festive season is nearing full swing.

“We’ve been astounded,” said Laura McNally (pictured, right), who is a manager at the charity and conceived the idea. “From toys to games, the gifts keep coming, ensuring that many kids will wake up to a wonderful surprise on Christmas Day!”

One exciting donation earlier this week from local business, Covkill Pest Control Services was in great taste too, as company owner Martin Watret of Binley (pictured, left) outdid the gift tag that he took from the tree and returned with a whopping one hundred selection boxes instead.

“I’ve been aware of the great work that Coventry Boys & Girls does in the area, providing a safe space and genuine opportunities for young people,” said Mr Watret. “As a community, we need to support these essential charities while we still have them. Small gestures can mean a lot.”
