The first brick of the new Coventry Boys & Girls Club building has been laid by the Lord Mayor of Coventry.

As part of a special ceremony, Councillor John Blundell was treated to a tour of the current Coventry Boys & Girls Club on Whitefriars Lane.

The members, who range from age seven to 18, showed off their dodgeball and dance skills for the Lord Mayor, who told them: “What you have here is fantastic, but I have to say it’s going to be absolutely magical when you get into the new building.”

The Coventry Boys & Girls Club has been in its current property since 1965, but plans for a new development by Coventry University provided an opportunity for the club to move just a few doors down on Whitefriars Lane .

The new site will allow the children to move into a modern, accessible building that spreads over three floors. There will also be full on-site parking.

The club offers activities and youth sessions up to four times a week, and has taken hundreds of children on summer excursions that include Cadbury World and the Jump In trampoline park.

“I have to say it’s been an eye opener,” he said.

The club hopes that the new facility will be completed and will be ready to move in by early next year.
