The L@TN group has won a Dragons Den style pitch to support their period poverty campaign

On December 14th, 2020, one of Coventry’s most enduring charities secured additional funding to make a difference in the area when it’s all-inclusive young girl’s group, known as L@TN (Look at Them Now) put their heads together and delivered a wining pitch to UK Youth’s EMPOWHER campaign.

UK Youth is a leading charity that exists to ensure all young people are equipped to thrive, working with a family of other charities such as the British Red Cross to address the lack of investment in today’s youth sector.

From the clubhouse on Whitefrairs Street, L@TN and members of the CBGC youth work team formulated a clear and concise pitch that explained the importance of ending period poverty. Whilst many people think that this is an issue only occurring in third world countries, the truth is that this problem is prevalent in the UK too.

‘Period Poverty’ means that people are unable to access and use sanitary products due to budget or educational constraints. It is a problem that causes many young women to miss both school and work days each year, not to mention the toll on physical and mental health that this impediment to a good quality of life takes.

Bodyform report that one in ten girls can’t afford to buy menstrual products according to research conducted by Plan International UK.

Roze Nevab of Coventry Boys & Girls Club was present during the online pitch and supported the girls through the exciting, but never-the-less nerve wracking pitch made to a collection of grown adults.

“It was exciting to see our young members tackling a daunting industry and developing their business skills, whilst contributing to the good of the area”, said Roze.

Excitingly, a panel of judges watching L@TN’s funding pitch via Zoom awarded the group of teenagers with £400. This important donation will go towards the group’s efforts to educate and supply women in need. L@TN will be delivering sanitary products where needed in the Coventry area. They will also be putting care packages together as part of an inspiring initiative. Once again, CBGC is extremely proud of its young members and the positive changes that they continue to enforce in the community.

Members of the judging panel commented that their minds had been blown by the professionalism of the pitch, and we couldn’t be prouder.
